Dexter Ronin Grant was our precious baby who was born on 17th August 2009. Dexter was diagnosed antenatally with a rare heart defect called Tricuspid Atresia and for the remainder of our pregnancy we were treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital in London. When Dexter arrived into the world he was remarkably healthy, the problems with the heart were more complex than first thought but after just 4 days we were allowed to bring Dexter home to his older siblings Mason and Alexis but future open heart surgeries would be necessary to help Dexter to lead a relatively normal life. On Thursday 3rd September 2009 Dexter was rushed to our local hospital as he became unwell with very low saturation levels and after further investigations it became apparent that his blood was not flowing through the heart chambers and was therefore transferred to The Evelina Children’s hospital in London. Later that evening Dexter underwent open heart surgery to improve the blood flows, the operation was a success but during the post – op hours Dexter’s heart rate increased dramatically and his blood pressure dropped too low and due to this our special baby so sadly passed away at 10.10pm on Friday 4th September aged just 18 days old. We are so blessed to have been able to meet and share a short time with Dexter and feel so lucky to have had him in our family and he will always be in our hearts and we will hold our special memories so very close. The days since Dexter grew his angel wings have been very dark but it is now our intentions to continue his memory in the form of “Dexter’s Fund” so we have now established this charity and we will be fundraising initially for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Evelina Children’s Hospital. With your help from these funds raised we will be paying for staff nurses to attend specialised training courses which is above and beyond the funding given by the NHS, we will also be donating money for toys and games for the children and their siblings as their annual budget is only £400 which is nowhere near enough. So once again thank you for your ongoing support. Best Wishes, Darren, Zara, Mason and Alexis |
